Mrs Thandiwe Banda, official Ceremony. 3rd International Congress of Black women.

Speaking during the Black Woman's third congress in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mrs Banda said most women were not aware of what gifts and talents they had.

Mrs Banda said from a natural point of view, each woman had divinely endowed gifts and talents which, with appropriate training, could be honed and developed into valuable skills.

However, Mrs Banda said there were a number of obstacles to the full emergence of major female-owned commercial entities that could positively impact the national economy.

She told delegates, who included DRC First Lady Marie Olive Lembe Kabila Kabange and Congo Brazavile's First Lady Antoinette Sassou Nguesso at the Africa Union (AU) Centre that women needed to be motivated to bring from within themselves the inner vision and strength that were usually suppressed by traditional settings where only boys were allowed to go to school and only men took up serious jobs.

The first lady said it was true that women in business were strong across the sub-region as they carried out cros-border businesses in their thousands and looked after their families.

Some female-owned businesses had evolved to become major employers in various countries.

"However, there are a number of obstacles to the full emergence of major female-owned commercial entities that could positively impact our national economies," she said.

Women needed to be helped to see their personal worth and have a fitting sense of self-esteem.

Mrs Banda said a demotivated woman, no matter the resources before her, would accomplish little.

"At times, demotivation arises from such evils as gender-based violence in the matrimonial home, rape, gender-based professional injustice and other forms of suppression.
